And three hours before dawn, and while it was still night, his Soul waked him, and said to him, `Rise up and go to the room of the merchant, even to the room in which he sleepeth, and slay him, and take from him his gold, for we have need of it.'
And the young Fisherman rose up and crept towards the room of the merchant, and over the feet of the merchant there was lying a curved sword, and the tray by the side of the merchant held nine purses of gold. And he reached out his hand and touched the sword, and when he touched it the merchant started and awoke, and leaping up seized himself the sword and cried to the young Fisherman, `Dost thou return evil for good, and pay with the shedding of blood for the kindness that I have shown thee?'
And his Soul said to the young Fisherman (и его Душа сказала молодому Рыбаку), `Strike him (ударь его),' and he struck him so (и он ударил его так; to strike (struck, stricken)) that he swooned (что он упал замертво: «упал в обморок»), and he seized then the nine purses of gold (и тогда он схватил девять кошелей золота), and fled hastily through the garden of pomegranates (и поспешно понесся по гранатовому саду; to flee (fled) — бежать, спасаться бегством), and set his face to the star (и обратил свое лицо к звезде) that is the star of morning (то была Утренняя Звезда /Венера/).
And when they had gone a league from the city (и когда они отошли на целое лье от города), the young Fisherman beat his breast (молодой Рыбак ударил себя в грудь; to beat (beat, beaten)), and said to his Soul (и сказал своей Душе), `Why didst thou bid me slay the merchant (почему ты приказала мне убить купца; to bade (bid, bidden)) and take his gold (и забрать его золото)? Surely thou art evil (ты, несомненно, злая).'
But his Soul answered him (но его Душа ответила ему), `Be at peace (будь спокоен), be at peace.'

And his Soul said to the young Fisherman, `Strike him,' and he struck him so that he swooned, and he seized then the nine purses of gold, and fled hastily through the garden of pomegranates, and set his face to the star that is the star of morning.
And when they had gone a league from the city, the young Fisherman beat his breast, and said to his Soul, `Why didst thou bid me slay the merchant and take his gold? Surely thou art evil.'
But his Soul answered him, `Be at peace, be at peace.'
`Nay (нет),' cried the young Fisherman (закричал молодой Рыбак), `I may not be at peace (я не могу быть спокоен), for all that thou hast made me to do (потому что все, что ты заставила меня сделать) I hate (мне ненавистно: «я ненавижу»). Thee also I hate (тебя я тоже ненавижу), and I bid thee tell me (и прошу тебя сказать мне) wherefore thou hast wrought with me (почему ты поступила со мною; to work (worked, wrought) — работать; действовать, поступать) in this wise (таким образом; wise — способ).'
And his Soul answered him (и его Душа ответила ему), `When thou didst send me forth (когда ты отослал меня) into the world (в мир) thou gavest me no heart (ты не дал мне сердца), so I learned to do all these things (поэтому я научилась делать все эти вещи = поступать так) and love them (и полюбила их).'

`Nay,' cried the young Fisherman, `I may not be at peace, for all that thou hast made me to do I hate. Thee also I hate, and I bid thee tell me wherefore thou hast wrought with me in this wise.'
And his Soul answered him, `When thou didst send me forth into the world thou gavest me no heart, so I learned to do all these things and love them.'
`What sayest thou (что ты говоришь)?' murmured the young Fisherman (прошептал молодой Рыбак).
`Thou knowest (ты знаешь),' answered his Soul (ответила его Душа), `thou knowest it well (ты хорошо это знаешь). Hast thou forgotten (разве ты забыл; to forget (forgot, forgotten)) that thou gavest me no heart (что ты не дал мне сердца)? I trow not (я полагаю, что нет; trow — арх. верить; полагать, думать). And so trouble not thyself nor me (поэтому не тревожься сам, и не тревожь меня), but be at peace (а будь спокоен), for there is no pain (потому что нет таких страданий; pain — боль; страдание, огорчение) that thou shalt not give away (которых ты не даруешь/не раздашь), nor any pleasure (и нет таких удовольствий/наслаждений) that thou shalt not receive (которых ты не получишь).'

`What sayest thou?' murmured the young Fisherman.
`Thou knowest,' answered his Soul, `thou knowest it well. Hast thou forgotten that thou gavest me no heart? I trow not. And so trouble not thyself nor me, but be at peace, for there is no pain that thou shalt not give away, nor any pleasure that thou shalt not receive.'
And when the young Fisherman heard these words (и когда молодой Рыбак услышал эти слова; to hear (heard)) he trembled and said to his Soul (он задрожал и сказал свой Душе), `Nay, but thou art evil (нет, ты воистину злая; thou art = you are), and hast made me forget my love (и ты заставили меня забыть мою возлюбленную; hast made = have made), and hast tempted me with temptations (и искушала меня искушениями; to tempt — уговаривать; соблазнять, искушать), and hast set my feet in the ways of sin (и направила мои стопы по путям греха).' And his Soul answered him (и его Душа ответила ему), `Thou hast not forgotten (не забыл ли ты) that when thou didst send me forth into the world (что когда ты отправил меня в мир) thou gavest me no heart (ты не дал мне сердца). Come, let us go to another city (давай же, пойдем в другой город), and make merry (и будем веселиться/пировать), for we have nine purses of gold (ведь у нас девять кошелей с золотом).'

And when the young Fisherman heard these words he trembled and said to his Soul, `Nay, but thou art evil, and hast made me forget my love, and hast tempted me with temptations, and hast set my feet in the ways of sin.' And his Soul answered him, `Thou hast not forgotten that when thou didst send me forth into the world thou gavest me no heart. Come, let us go to another city, and make merry, for we have nine purses of gold.'
But the young Fisherman took the nine purses of gold (но молодой Рыбак взял эти девять кошелей с золотом; to take (took, taken)), and flung them down (и бросил их наземь; to fling (flung)), and trampled on them (и растоптал их).
`Nay,' he cried, `but I will have nought to do with thee (я не хочу иметь с тобой никакого дела), nor will I journey with thee anywhere (и никуда не пойду /путешествовать/ с тобой), but even as I sent thee away before (и точно также, как я отослал/прогнал тебя прежде), so will I send thee away now (так же я отошлю/прогоню тебя и сейчас), for thou hast brought me no good (потому что ты не принесла мне ничего хорошего; to bring (brought)).' And he turned his back to the moon (и он повернулся спиной к луне), and with the little knife that had the handle of green viper's skin (и маленьким ножом с рукояткой из кожи зеленой гадюки) he strove to cut from his feet (он пытался отрезать от своих ног; to strive (strove, striven) — стараться, прилагать усилия) that shadow of the body (ту тень тела) which is the body of the Soul (которая является телом Души).

But the young Fisherman took the nine purses of gold, and flung them down, and trampled on them.
`Nay,' he cried, `but I will have nought to do with thee, nor will I journey with thee anywhere, but even as I sent thee away before, so will I send thee away now, for thou hast brought me no good.' And he turned his back to the moon, and with the little knife that had the handle of green viper's skin he strove to cut from his feet that shadow of the body which is the body of the Soul.
Yet his Soul stirred not from him (однако его Душа не шелохнулась /от него/; to stir — шевелить(ся), двигать(ся)), nor paid heed to his command (и не обратила никакого внимания на его приказание; to pay (paid) — платить), but said to him (а сказала ему), `The spell that the Witch told thee (то заклинание, которое Ведьма сказала тебе) avails thee no more (больше тебе не поможет; to avail — быть полезным, пригодным, помогать), for I may not leave thee (потому что /больше/ я не могу тебя покинуть), nor mayest thou drive me forth (и ты не можешь прогнать меня прочь; to drive — вести, ездить; гнать). Once in his life (только один раз в жизни) may a man send his Soul away (может человек прогнать свою Душу), but he who receiveth back his Soul (но тот, кто принял свою Душу назад; to receive — получать; принимать) must keep it with him for ever (должен сохранить ее с собой навсегда; to keep — держать, иметь, хранить), and this is his punishment (и в этом его наказание) and his reward (и его награда).'
And the young Fisherman grew pale (и молодой Рыбак побледнел: «стал бледным»; pale — бледный, to grow (grew, grown)) and clenched his hands (и стиснул/сжал руки) and cried (и закричал), `She was a false Witch (то была лживая Ведьма; false — ложный; фальшивый, неискренний) in that she told me not that (потому что она не сказала мне об этом; to tell (told)).'
`Nay (нет),' answered his Soul (ответила Душа), `but she was true to Him she worships (но она была правдивой/верной для Того, кому она поклоняется; true — верный, правильный; настоящий, подлинный), and whose servant she will be ever (и чьей служанкой она будет всегда).'

Yet his Soul stirred not from him, nor paid heed to his command, but said to him, `The spell that the Witch told thee avails thee no more, for I may not leave thee, nor mayest thou drive me forth. Once in his life may a man send his Soul away, but he who receiveth back his Soul must keep it with him for ever, and this is his punishment and his reward.'
And the young Fisherman grew pale and clenched his hands and cried, `She was a false Witch in that she told me not that.'
`Nay,' answered his Soul, `but she was true to Him she worships, and whose servant she will be ever.'
And when the young Fisherman knew (а когда молодой Рыбак узнал; to know (knew, known)) that he could no longer get rid of his Soul (что он больше не может избавиться от своей Души), and that it was an evil Soul (и что она была злой душой) and would abide with him always (и что она всегда пребудет с ним; to abide — оставаться, пребывать), he fell upon the ground (он упал на землю; to fall (fell, fallen)) weeping bitterly (горько рыдая).
And when it was day (а когда настал день) the young Fisherman rose up (молодой рыбак поднялся; to rise (rose, risen)) and said to his Soul, `I will bind my hands (я свяжу себе руки; to bind — вязать; связывать) that I may not do thy bidding (чтобы я не мог исполнять твои приказания = повиноваться тебе), and close my lips (и закрою свои уста) that I may not speak thy words (чтобы я не мог произносить твои слова), and I will return to the place (и я вернусь на то место; to return — возвращаться, идти обратно) where she whom I love has her dwelling (где жилище той, которую я люблю: «где у той, которую я люблю, есть жилище»). Even to the sea will I return (к самому морю я возвращусь), and to the little bay (и к той небольшой бухте) where she is wont to sing (где она имеет обыкновение петь), and I will call to her (и я позову ее) and tell her the evil I have done (и скажу ей о том зле, что я совершил) and the evil thou hast wrought on me (и о том зле, которое ты разожгла во мне; to work (wrought) up — обрабатывать; возбуждать, разжигать /чувства, страсти/).'
