happen [ˈhæpǝn] march [mɑ: tʃ] hearth [hɑ: Ɵ]
The poor little hobbit sat down in the hall and put his head in his hands, and wondered what had happened, and what was going to happen, and whether they would all stay to supper. Then the bell rang again louder than ever, and he had to run to the door. It was not four after all, it was FIVE. Another dwarf had come along while he was wondering in the hall. He had hardly turned the knob, before they were all inside, bowing and saying “at your service” one after another. Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, and Gloin were their names; and very soon two purple hoods, a grey hood, a brown hood, and a white hood were hanging on the pegs, and off they marched with their broad hands stuck in their gold and silver belts to join the others. Already it had almost become a throng. Some called for ale, and some for porter, and one for coffee, and all of them for cakes; so the hobbit was kept very busy for a while. A big jug of coffee had just been set in the hearth, the seed-cakes were gone, and the dwarves were starting on a round of buttered scones, when there came a loud knock. Not a ring, but a hard rat-tat on the hobbit’s beautiful green door. Somebody was banging with a stick!
Bilbo rushed along the passage (Бильбо понесся по проходу), very angry (очень сердитый), and altogether bewildered (и одновременно смущенный) and bewuthered (и взволнованный, и взбешенный; bewuthered — авторск.: be — + wuthered (север. англ. диал) = о ветре: дующий сильно, с ревом, о месте: характеризуемый таким ревом: т. е. зд. = встревоженный и рассерженный шумом) — this was the most awkward Wednesday (это была самая нескладная среда) he ever remembered (какую он когда-либо помнил). He pulled open the door with a jerk (он потянул дверь и открыл ее рывком), and they all fell in (и все они ввалились в дом; to fall (fell, fallen) — падать), one on top of the other (один поверх другого; top — верхушка, верхняя часть). More dwarves (еще больше гномов), four more (аж четверо)! And there was Gandalf behind (и за ними стоял Гэндальф), leaning on his staff and laughing (опиравшийся на свой посох и хохочущий). He had made quite a dent (он сделал целую вмятину) on the beautiful door (на красивой двери); he had also, by the way (он также, между прочим), knocked out the secret mark (сбил тот самый секретный знак) that he had put there the morning before (который он нанес туда /на дверь/ предыдущим утром).

He had made quite a dent on the beautiful door; he had also, by the way, knocked out the secret mark that he had put there the morning before.
“Carefully (осторожнее)! Carefully!” he said (сказал он). “It is not like you, Bilbo (это так на тебя не похоже, Бильбо), to keep friends waiting on the mat (заставлять друзей ждать за дверью; mat — мат, циновка, подстилка), and then open the door like a pop-gun (и после этого открывать дверь, словно /выстреливая/ из пугача)! Let me introduce (позвольте вам представить) Bifur (Бифур), Bofur (Бофур), Bombur (Бомбур), and especially Thorin (и, особенно, Торин)!”
“At your service (к вашим услугам)!” said Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur standing in a row (сказал Бифур, Бофур и Бомбур, стоя в ряд). Then they hung up two yellow hoods (затем они повесили /на колышки/ два желтых капюшона) and a pale green one (и один светло-зеленый); and also a sky-blue one (а также один небесно-голубой) with a long silver tassel (с длинной серебряной кисточкой). This last belonged to Thorin (этот последний принадлежал Торину), an enormously important dwarf (невероятно важному гному), in fact no other than the great Thorin Oakenshield himself (на самом деле, ни кому другому, как великому Торину Оукеншильду; oaken — дубовый; shield — щит), who was not at all pleased (который вовсе не был доволен тем) at falling flat on Bilbo’s mat (что упал плашмя на придверный коврик Бильбо) with Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur on top of him (с Бифуром, Бофуром и Бомбуром поверх него). For one thing (прежде всего потому) Bombur was immensely fat and heavy (что Бомбур был неимоверно толстый и тяжелый). Thorin indeed was very haughty (Торин на самом-то деле был очень надменный), and said nothing about service (и не сказал ничего ни о каких услугах); but poor Mr. Baggins said he was sorry so many times (но бедный мистер Бэггинс сказал, что ему очень жаль, так много раз), that at last he grunted (что в конце концов он пробормотал) “pray don’t mention it (прошу, не упоминайте об этом; don’t mention it — не стоит, ничего—вответнаизвинения), ” and stopped frowning (и перестал хмуриться).

“Now we are all here (теперь мы все здесь)!” said Gandalf (сказал Гэндальф), looking at the row of thirteen hoods (смотря на ряд из тринадцати капюшонов) — the best detachable party hoods (самых лучших отстежных капюшонов для хождения в гости; to detach — отделять (ся); отвязывать) — and his own hat hanging on the pegs (и на свою собственную шляпу, висевших на колышках).
“Quite a merry gathering (очень веселое собрание)! I hope there is something left (я надеюсь, что что-нибудь осталось) for the late-comers (для опоздавших: «поздно пришедших») to eat and drink (покушать и выпить)! What’s that (что это)? Tea (чай)! No thank you (нет уж, спасибо)! A little red wine, I think, for me (мне: «для меня» немного красного вина, я думаю). ”
“And for me (и мне), ” said Thorin (сказал Торин).
“And raspberry jam and apple-tart (и малинового варенья и яблочного пирога), ” said Bifur.
“And mince-pies (и сладких пирожков с изюмом и миндалем) and cheese (и сыру), ” said Bofur.
“And pork-pie and salad (и пирога со свининой и салату), ” said Bombur.
“And more cakes and ale and coffee (и еще кексов, и светлого пива, и кофе), if you don’t mind (если вы не возражаете), ” called the other dwarves through the door (потребовали: «прокричали» другие гномы через дверь).

“Put on a few eggs (и добавьте еще несколько яиц), there’s a good fellow
(будьте уж так добры: «хорошим человеком»)!” Gandalf called after him (Гэндальф сказал ему вслед), as the hobbit stumped off to the pantries (когда хоббит поковылял к кладовым). “And just bring out the cold chicken and pickles (да и принесли бы холодной курицы и пикулей)!”
“Seems to know (кажется, что знает) as much about the inside of my larders (также много о запасах в моих кладовых; inside — внутреннее пространство, внутренности) as I do myself (сколько я и сам знаю)!” thought Mr. Baggins (думал мистер Бэггинс), who was feeling positively flummoxed (который чувствовал себя определенно сбитым с толку), and was beginning to wonder (и начинал размышлять) whether a most wretched adventure (уж не самое ли ужасное приключение; wretched — несчастный, жалкий, отвратительный) had not come right into his house (вошло прямо к нему в дом). By the time (к тому самому времени) he had got all the bottles (когда он все бутылки) and dishes (и блюда) and knives (и ножи) and forks (и вилки) and glasses (и стаканы) and plates (и тарелки) and spoons (и ложки) and things (и еду и питье; thing — вещь, предмет) piled up on big trays (нагромоздил на больших подносах), he was getting very hot (он становился все более разгоряченным; hot — горячий, жаркий), and red in the face (раскрасневшимся: «красным лицом»), and annoyed (и раздраженным).
