Yet would she never come near him that he might touch her. Often times he called to her and prayed of her, but she would not; and when he sought to seize her she dived into the water as a seal might dive, nor did he see her again that day. And each day the sound of her voice became sweeter to his ears. So sweet was her voice that he forgot his nets and his cunning, and had no care of his craft.

And one evening he called to her, and said: `Little Mermaid, little Mermaid, I love thee. Take me for thy bridegroom, for I love thee.'
But the Mermaid shook her head. `Thou hast a human soul,' she answered. `If only thou would'st send away thy soul, then could I love thee.'
And the young Fisherman said to himself (и тогда молодой Рыбак сказал себе) `Of what use is my soul to me (какая мне польза от моей души; use — употребление; польза, толк)? I cannot see it (я не могу ее /душу/ увидеть). I may not touch it (я не могу прикоснуться к ней). I do not know it (я не знаю ее). Surely I will send it away from me (несомненно, я прогоню ее прочь: «от себя»), and much gladness shall be mine (и великая радость будет моей).' And a cry of joy broke from his lips (и крик радости сорвался с его губ; to break (broke, broken) — ломать; срываться), and standing up in the painted boat (и, вставая в своей разрисованной лодке; to paint — красить, окрашивать, расписывать), he held out his arms to the Mermaid (он протянул свои руки к Русалке). `I will send my soul away (я прогоню прочь свою душу),' he cried (вскричал он), `and you shall be my bride (и ты будешь моей невестой), and I will be the bridegroom (а я буду женихом), and in the depth of the sea we will dwell together (и мы вдвоем будем обитать/жить в глубине моря), and all that thou hast sung of (и все, о чем ты пела; thou hast = you have; to sing (sang, sung)) thou shalt show me (ты мне покажешь; shalt = shall), and all that thou desirest (и все, что ты желаешь; thou desirest = you desire) I will do (я выполню), nor shall our lives be divided (и наши жизни будут нераздельны: «и не будут наши жизни разделенными»).'

And the young Fisherman said to himself `Of what use is my soul to me? I cannot see it. I may not touch it. I do not know it. Surely I will send it away from me, and much gladness shall be mine.' And a cry of joy broke from his lips, and standing up in the painted boat, he held out his arms to the Mermaid. `I will send my soul away,' he cried, `and you shall be my bride, and I will be the bridegroom, and in the depth of the sea we will dwell together, and all that thou hast sung of thou shalt show me, and all that thou desirest I will do, nor shall our lives be divided.'
And the little Mermaid laughed for pleasure (и маленькая Русалочка засмеялась от удовольствия), and hid her face in her hands (и спрятала свое лицо в своих руках = и закрыла свое лицо руками; to hide (hid, hidden) — прятать).
`But how shall I send my soul from me (но как же мне прогнать прочь мою душу)?' cried the young Fisherman (закричал молодой Рыбак). `Tell me how I may do it (скажи мне, как я могу это сделать), and lo! it shall be done (и вмиг это будет сделано).'
`Alas (увы)! I know not (я не знаю),' said the little Mermaid: `the Sea-folk have no souls (у Морского Народа нет душ).' And she sank down into the deep (и она опустилась в глубину), looking wistfully at him (глядя на него с тоской/задумчиво).

`Alas! I know not,' said the little Mermaid: `the Sea-folk have no souls.' And she sank down into the deep, looking wistfully at him.

And the young Fisherman passed in (и молодой Рыбак вошел), and knelt down on the sweet-smelling rushes of the floor (и опустился на колени на душистые/ароматные тростники /лежавшие/ на полу; to kneel (knelt); sweet-smelling = sweet-scented — душистый, sweet — сладкий; душистый, to smell — обонять; пахнуть), and cried to the Priest (и воззвал к Священнику) who was reading out of the Holy Book (который читал вслух отрывки из Библии: «Святую Книгу»; to read smth. out of a book — вычитать что-либо в книге, процитировать что-либо из книги) and said to him, `Father, I am in love with one of the Sea-folk (Святой Отец, я люблю одну из Обитательниц Моря: «из Морского народа»; to be in love (with smb.) — любить кого-либо, быть влюбленным), and my soul hindereth me from having my desire (а моя душа не дает/мешает мне осуществить свое желание; to hinder — мешать, служить помехой; удержать, не дать). Tell me how I can send my soul away from me (скажи мне, как я могу прогнать ее прочь), for in truth (так как поистине) I have no need of it (она мне не нужна). Of what value is my soul to me (какая же важность/полезность моей души /для меня/; value — ценность)? I cannot see it (я не могу увидеть ее /душу/). I may not touch it (я не могу потрогать ее). I do not know it (я не знаю ее).'

And the young Fisherman passed in, and knelt down on the sweet-smelling rushes of the floor, and cried to the Priest who was reading out of the Holy Book and said to him, `Father, I am in love with one of the Sea-folk, and my soul hindereth me from having my desire. Tell me how I can send my soul away from me, for in truth I have no need of it. Of what value is my soul to me? I cannot see it. I may not touch it. I do not know it.'
And the Priest beat his breast (и Священник ударил себя в грудь), and answered (и ответил), `Alack (увы), Alack, thou art mad (ты сошел с ума: «ты сумасшедший»; thou art = you are), or hast eaten of poisonous herb (или отведал: «съел» отравленных трав; hast = have, poison — яд, отрава), for the soul is the noblest part of man (потому что душа — это прекраснейшая/самая благородная часть человека), and was given to us by God (и была дарована/дана нам Господом Богом; to give (gave, given)) that we should nobly use it (чтобы мы благородно распорядились ею; to use — употреблять, использовать). There is no thing more precious (нет ничего: «вещи» драгоценнее) than a human soul (чем человеческая душа), nor any earthly thing (и ничто земное: «и никакая земная/суетная вещь») that can be weighed with it (не может сравниться с ней; to weigh — взвешивать; сравнивать, соизмерять).

And the Priest beat his breast, and answered, `Alack, Alack, thou art mad, or hast eaten of poisonous herb, for the soul is the noblest part of man, and was given to us by God that we should nobly use it. There is no thing more precious than a human soul, nor any earthly thing that can be weighed with it.
It is worth all the gold (она стоит/имеет ценность всего золота) that is in the world (что есть в этом мире), and is more precious (и драгоценнее) than the rubies of the kings (чем царские рубины). Therefore, my son (поэтому, сын мой), think not any more of this matter (больше не думай об этом /деле/), for it is a sin (потому как это грех) that may not be forgiven (который не может быть прощен; to forgive (forgave, forgiven) — прощать; оставлять, отпускать грехи). And as for the Sea-folk (а что касается Морского Народа), they are lost (они заблудшие; lost — потерянный; заблудившийся), and they who would traffic with them (и те, кто будут иметь с ними дело; to traffic — торговать; иметь дело) are lost also (тоже окажутся заблудшими). They are as the beasts of the field (они как /полевые = дикие/ звери) that know not good from evil (которые не могут отличить добро от зла; to know — знать; отличать, различать), and for them the Lord has not died (и Господь Бог не умирал за них; lord — господин, владыка, the Lord — Господь Бог).'
