Suddenly a dog bayed in the wood, and the dancers stopped, and going up two by two, knelt down, and kissed the man's hands. As they did so, a little smile touched his proud lips, as a bird's wing touches the water and makes it laugh. But there was disdain in it. He kept looking at the young Fisherman.
`Come! let us worship,' whispered the Witch, and she led him up, and a great desire to do as she besought him seized on him, and he followed her. But when he came close, and without knowing why he did it, he made on his breast the sign of the Cross, and called upon the holy name.
No sooner had he done so (как только он так сделал; no sooner … than — как только … (так)) than the witches screamed like hawks (так ведьмы пронзительно завопили, как хищные птицы) and flew away (и улетели прочь; to fly (flew, flown)), and the pallid face (и то мертвенно-бледное лицо) that had been watching him (что наблюдало за ним) twitched with a spasm of pain (исказилось от приступа боли; to twitch — дергать, подергивать(ся); spasm — судорога, спазм; приступ). As he leapt upon the saddle (вскочив в седло; to leap (lept) — прыгать, скакать) he turned round (он обернулся), and looked at the young Fisherman sadly (и печально взглянул на молодого Рыбака).

The man went over to a little wood, and whistled. A jennet with silver trappings came running to meet him. As he leapt upon the saddle he turned round, and looked at the young Fisherman sadly.
And the Witch with the red hair (и Ведьма с рыжими волосами) tried to fly away also (тоже пыталась улететь прочь), but the Fisherman caught her by her wrists (но Рыбак схватил ее за запястья = за руки), and held her fast (и крепко держал ее; to hold (held)). `Loose me (отцепись от меня; to loose — освобождать, выпускать),' she cried, `and let me go (и отпусти меня: «позволь мне уйти»). For thou hast named (ибо ты назвал имя; thou hast = you have; to name — называть, давать имя) what should not be named (которое не следует называть), and shown the sign (и показал тот знак; to show (showed, shown)) that may not be looked at (на который смотреть нельзя).'
`Nay (нет),' he answered (ответил он), `but I will not let thee go (я не отпущу тебя: «не позволю тебе уйти») till thou hast told me the secret (до тех самых пор, пока ты мне не расскажешь секрет/тайну).'
`What secret (какой секрет)?' said the Witch, wrestling with him like a wild cat (борясь с ним = вырываясь от него, как дикая кошка; to wrestle — бороться), and biting her foam-flecked lips (и кусая свои губы, которые были покрыты пеной; to fleck — покрывать пятнами).
`Thou knowest (ты /прекрасно/ знаешь),' he made answer (ответил он).

And the Witch with the red hair tried to fly away also, but the Fisherman caught her by her wrists, and held her fast. `Loose me,' she cried, `and let me go. For thou hast named what should not be named, and shown the sign that may not be looked at.'
`Nay,' he answered, `but I will not let thee go till thou hast told me the secret.'
`What secret?' said the Witch, wrestling with him like a wild cat, and biting her foam-flecked lips.
`Thou knowest,' he made answer.
Her grass-green eyes (ее зеленые глаза /цвета травы/) grew dim with tears (затуманились слезами; to grow (grew, grown), dim — тусклый; смутный), and she said to the Fisherman, `Ask me anything but that (проси у меня чего угодно, но только не это)!'
He laughed (он рассмеялся), and held her all the more tightly (и еще крепче схватил: «держал» ее; to hold (held)).

Her grass-green eyes grew dim with tears, and she said to the Fisherman, `Ask me anything but that!'

`What shall this serve me (для чего он мне = как мне его использовать; to serve — служить; выполнять назначение)?' he asked of her wondering (спросил он у нее озадаченно/удивленно; to wonder — интересоваться; изумляться).

`What shall this serve me?' he asked of her wondering.
She was silent for a few moments, and a look of terror came over her face. Then she brushed her hair back from her forehead, and smiling strangely she said to him, `What men call the shadow of the body is not the shadow of the body, but is the body of the soul. Stand on the sea-shore with thy back to the moon, and cut away from around thy feet thy shadow, which is thy soul's body, and bid thy soul leave thee, and it will do so.'
The young Fisherman trembled (молодой Рыбак задрожал). `Is this true (это правда)?' he murmured (прошептал он).
`It is true (это правда), and I would (и мне очень хотелось бы) that I had not told thee of it (чтобы я не говорила тебе об этом),' she cried (закричала она), and she clung to his knees weeping (и она схватилась за его колени, рыдая; to cling (clung) — прилипать, цепляться).

And his Soul (и его Душа) that was within him (что жила в нем: «была внутри него») called out to him (призвала его) and said, `Lo! I have dwelt with thee (послушай, я жила с тобою; to dwell (dwelt)) for all these years (все эти годы), and have been thy servant (и была твоею слугою). Send me not away from thee now (не прогоняй меня прочь от себя), for what evil have I done thee (ведь я не сделала тебе ничего дурного: «ведь какое зло сделала я тебе»)?'

The young Fisherman trembled. `Is this true?' he murmured.
`It is true, and I would that I had not told thee of it,' she cried, and she clung to his knees weeping.
He put her from him and left her in the rank grass, and going to the edge of the mountain he placed the knife in his belt, and began to climb down.
And his Soul that was within him called out to him and said, `Lo! I have dwelt with thee for all these years, and have been thy servant. Send me not away from thee now, for what evil have I done thee?'
And the young Fisherman laughed (а молодой Рыбак рассмеялся). `Thou has done me no evil (ты не причинила мне никакого зла), but I have no need of thee (но ты мне просто не нужна),' he answered (ответил он). `The world is wide (мир велик: «широк»; wide — широкий, от края до края; обширный, пространный), and there is Heaven also (так же есть Небеса), and Hell (и Ад), and that dim twilight house (и тот тусклый сумеречный дом) that lies between (что лежит между ними). Go wherever thou wilt (иди туда, куда бы ты ни пожелала), but trouble me not (но не тревожь меня), for my love is calling to me (ибо ко мне взывает моя любовь).'
And his Soul besought him piteously (и его Душа жалобно молила его; to beseech (besought), pity — жалость, сострадание), but he heeded it not (но он не обращал на нее внимание), but leapt from crag to crag (а прыгал со скалы на скалу; to leap (lept)), being sure-footed as a wild goat (так как он так же твердо стоял на ногах, как дикий козел; sure-footed — не спотыкающийся), and at last he reached the level ground (и, наконец, он добрался до /уровня/ земли; to reach — протягивать; достигать места назначения) and the yellow shore of the sea (и желтого берега моря).
