And the young Fisherman laughed. `Thou has done me no evil, but I have no need of thee,' he answered. `The world is wide, and there is Heaven also, and Hell, and that dim twilight house that lies between. Go wherever thou wilt, but trouble me not, for my love is calling to me.'

The world is cruel (мир жесток), give me thy heart to take with me (дай мне с собой твое сердце: «дай мне твое сердце, чтобы взять с собой»).'
He tossed his head (он тряхнул своей головой; to toss — бросать, кидать; вскидывать /голову/) and smiled (и улыбнулся). `With what should I love my love (а чем же я буду любить свою любимую; love — любовь; предмет любви, возлюбленный/ая) if I gave thee my heart (если я отдам тебе свое сердце; to give (gave, given))?' he cried.
`Nay, but be merciful (но, будь же милосерден; mercy — милосердие, сострадание),' said his Soul: `give me thy heart (дай мне твое сердце), for the world is very cruel (потому что мир очень жесток), and I am afraid (и я боюсь).'

And his Soul said to him, `If indeed thou must drive me from thee, send me not forth without a heart. The world is cruel, give me thy heart to take with me.'

`Nay, but be merciful,' said his Soul: `give me thy heart, for the world is very cruel, and I am afraid.'
`My heart is my love's (мое сердце принадлежит моей возлюбленной),' he answered (ответил он), `therefore tarry not (поэтому не мешкай; to tarry — пребывать, жить; медлить, мешкать), but get thee gone (а уходи).'
`Should I not love also (разве я не могу тоже любить)?' asked his Soul (спросила Душа).
`Get thee gone (уходи), for I have no need of thee (потому что ты мне не нужна: «я в тебе не нуждаюсь»; need — надобность, нужда),' cried the young Fisherman (вскричал молодой Рыбак), and he took the little knife (и он взял маленький нож; to take (took, taken)) with its handle of green viper's skin (с рукояткой из кожи зеленой гадюки), and cut away his shadow (и отрезал свою тень) from around his feet (вокруг ног; foot (мн.ч. feet)), and it rose up (и она поднялась; to rise (rose, risen)) and stood before him (и встала перед ним; to stand (stood)), and looked at him (и взглянула на него), and it was even as himself (и была она точно такая же, как он сам).

`Get thee gone, for I have no need of thee,' cried the young Fisherman, and he took the little knife with its handle of green viper's skin, and cut away his shadow from around his feet, and it rose up and stood before him, and looked at him, and it was even as himself.
He crept back (он содрогнулся /и отпрянул/ назад; to creep (crept) — ползать; чувствовать мурашки по телу, содрогаться), and thrust the knife into his belt (и засунул нож за /свой/ поясь; to thrust (thrust) — толкать; совать, засовывать), and a feeling of awe came over him (и чувство благоговейного страха овладело им; to come (came, come) over smb. — овладеть кем-либо, захватывать кого-либо). `Get thee gone (убирайся),' he murmured (прошептал он), `and let me see thy face no more (и чтобы я больше не видел твоего лица: «и позволь мне больше не видеть твоего лица»; to let smb. do smth. — разрешить, позволить кому-либо сделать что-либо).'

`How shall we meet (как мы встретимся)?' cried the young Fisherman (закричал молодой Рыбак). `Thou wilt not follow me (ты же не последуешь за мной) into the depths of the sea (в глубины моря)?'

He crept back, and thrust the knife into his belt, and a feeling of awe came over him. `Get thee gone,' he murmured, `and let me see thy face no more.'

And the Soul stood on the lonely beach (а Душа стояла на пустынном: «одиноком» берегу) and watched them (и наблюдала за ними). And when they had sunk down into the sea (и, когда они опустились в море; to sink (sank, sunk) — тонуть; опускаться, падать), it went weeping away (она пошла, рыдая, прочь; to go (went, gone)) over the marshes (по болотам).

`What need should I have of thee?' cried the young Fisherman, `but be it as thou wilt,' and he plunged into the water, and the Tritons blew their horns, and the little Mermaid rose up to meet him, and put her arms around his neck and kissed him on the mouth.
And the Soul stood on the lonely beach and watched them. And when they had sunk down into the sea, it went weeping away over the marshes.
And after a year was over (год спустя; to be over — окончиться, завершиться) the Soul came down to the shore of the sea (Душа спустилась на берег моря) and called to the young Fisherman (и позвала молодого Рыбака), and he rose out of the deep (и тот поднялся из глубины /морской/; to rise (rose, risen)), and said, `Why dost thou call to me (почему ты позвала меня; dost thou = do you)?'
And the Soul answered (и Душа ответила), `Come nearer, that I may speak with thee (подойди поближе, чтобы я могла поговорить с тобой), for I have seen marvellous things (потому что я видела удивительные вещи).'
So he came nearer (он подошел = подвинулся поближе), and couched in the shallow water (и прилег на мелководье; shallow — мелкий, неглубокий), and leaned his head upon his hand (и упершись головой о руку; to lean — наклоняться; опираться) and listened (стал слушать).

And after a year was over the Soul came down to the shore of the sea and called to the young Fisherman, and he rose out of the deep, and said, `Why dost thou call to me?'
And the Soul answered, `Come nearer, that I may speak with thee, for I have seen marvellous things.'
So he came nearer, and couched in the shallow water, and leaned his head upon his hand and listened.
And the Soul said to him (и Душа сказала ему), `When I left thee (когда я оставила тебя; to leave (left)) I turned my face to the East (я повернулась лицом на Восток) and journeyed (и отправилась путешествовать). From the East cometh everything that is wise (с Востока приходит все мудрое). Six days I journeyed (я путешествовала шесть дней), and on the morning of the seventh day (и на утро седьмого дня) I came to a hill (я подошла к холму) that is in the country of the Tartars (что стоит в стране Татар). I sat down (я присела; to sit (sat)) under the shade of a tamarisk tree (в тени: «под тенью» /дерева/ тамариска) to shelter myself from the sun (чтобы укрыться от солнца; to shelter — приютить; укрыться, спрятаться). The land was dry (земля была сухой), and burnt up with the heat (и выжженной от жары; to burn (burnt, burned) — жечь; гореть, пылать). The people went to and fro over the plain (люди ходили туда и сюда по этой равнине) like flies (подобно мухам; fly — муха) crawling upon a disk of polished copper (ползающим по диску из полированной меди).
