Тхераваду, а также некоторые другие школы буддизма иногда относят к "Хинаяне" (то есть, "Малой колеснице"), что, однако, вызывает негодование многих последователей школы Тхеравада, так как те считают такое сравнение с Махаяной (то есть, "Большой колесницей") оскорбительным. Основное отличие между школами "Махаяны" и "Хинаяны" в том, что первые стремятся достичь состояния Будды для помощи всему живому, последние же стремятся к освобождению. — Примеч. перев.
